BRAKE SERVICE BY THE EXPERTS

When stopping on a dime is harder than it sounds.

How Do Car Brakes Work?

Your vehicle’s brake system includes a brake disc or rotor, a brake caliper, and brake pads. When you press the brake pedal, pressurized hydraulic fluid forces the brake pads against the surface of the rotor, which produces friction to slow down your vehicle.

Symptoms of Needing Brake Service:

  • The brake pedal feels spongy or if it takes a longer distance to stop than usual
  • Your vehicle pulls to one side or the other when you apply the brakes
  • You hear unusual noises or your vehicle vibrates while applying the brakes

WHAT IS DOING DURING A BRAKE SERVICE?

Brake service can entail replacing one or all brake components. Most commonly, brake pads need replacing because they endure a majority of the friction during the braking process and wear away faster.

Your brake rotors, which the brake pads squeeze against to slow down, also wear down due to friction and eventually require replacing.

Like other fluids in your car, brake fluid also needs to be replaced because it loses its effectiveness as it collects dirt and debris over time.

QUESTIONS? MORRIE’S HAS THE ANSWERS

Q: Why are my brakes making noises?
A: A grinding noise likely indicates a worn-down brake pad.

Q: What causes a spongy brake pedal?

A: If you need to press the brake pedal harder than usual or your vehicle takes longer to stop, an issue with your brakes is the likely culprit.

Q: How do I know my car needs brake fluid?
A: The ABS light illuminating in your dashboard is a common sign you need to add to or replace your brake fluid. You should also check your brake fluid if you notice pedal issues or noises while braking.

Q: Why does my car pull to one side when I brake?
A: A hydraulic brake issue, mechanical problem, or a steering/chassis issue can cause your vehicle to pull to one side while braking.
