What You’ll Need for a MAZDA Key Fob Battery Replacement

The best part about replacing your Mazda key fob battery is that you don’t have to be a master mechanic to do so. Many Woodbury drivers can perform the replacement process from their own home with just a few simple tools. Here’s what you need to replace your Mazda key fob battery:

  1. A replacement battery on hand (CR2025 battery)
  2. Your Mazda key fob
  3. A small flat head screwdriver with the head wrapped in tape to prevent scratches

If you don’t have these on hand, you can find them in our parts store at Morrie's Inver Grove Mazda.

How to Open a MAZDA Key Fob

The first step in a Mazda key fob battery replacement is opening your Mazda key fob. Just like with the rest of the process, opening your Mazda key fob is relatively straightforward. Here’s how to open a Mazda key fob step by step:

  1. Push the auxiliary key button on the back of your key fob. This will remove the metal auxiliary key.
  2. When the metal key is out, you should see a slot on either side of your key fob case.
  3. Use your flathead screwdriver with the tape wrapped around the head to pry open the key fob case.
  4. Pry one side first, and then pry open the other side. Be sure not to apply too much pressure.
  5. The case should now be removed, and you can place the case to the side so that you can put it back on after replacing the battery.

How to Change the Battery in a MAZDA Key Fob

Now that you’ve opened your Mazda key fob case, the next step is to take out the old battery and replace it with a new one. Here’s how to change the battery in your Mazda key fob:

  1. Take off the cap on the battery, and place it next to the key fob case.
  2. With the cap off, the battery in your key fob should be fully visible. When taking it out, be sure as to not damage the small rubber ring underneath it.
  3. If the rubber ring does get scratched, you’ll want to be sure to replace it before changing the battery.
  4. With the ring in its correct position, take the new battery, and put it in the correct position. The positive side (+) should be facing upward.
  5. Once the battery is inside the key fob, put the battery cap back over the battery.
  6. Reattach both sides of the key fob case one side at a time. You should hear them click.
